Now with more music!

Rdio streaming music support is now in! This means everyone hears at least samples of all the tracks, which already makes for decent music discovery. If you have an Rdio account, however, you’ll hear full-length tracks, which is even better! You don’t need to log in to Rdio on Fathom; as long as you’re logged in on the Rdio site, it just works (thanks to the great Rdio API).

So what are you waiting for? Get hunting!

Still Here

Hey there! Been a while… kind of got distracted working on other things. I’m back now though, at least part-time (Fathom doesn’t yet pay the bills, after all).

So, what’s up? The bad news is that our Grooveshark trial period has ended, so no more free streaming music. You can still stream on Fathom with a Grooveshark Anywhere account, available for $9.99/month (only $5/month if you order during December). If there’s enough interest, we could possibly do a subscription direct through Fathom as well. Let me know if that appeals.

In the meantime, I’ll keep working on the site. The first thing, in the works right now, is Favorites, so you can keep track of your discoveries. I’ve got some interesting ideas for pawing through your Favorites, as well as social features to build on top of them.

Next up after that, I think, will be Rdio support. With a free account from them, you’ll be able to stream a limited number of songs every month, and for $5 it’s unlimited. Even without an account, you can at least hear 30-second samples, which is better than what we’ve got now.

After that, we’ll see… any requests?

First New Feature!

It’s been great to have everyone using Fathom, with all the ideas and feedback coming in. There have been lots of good suggestions, but the most popular one is to be able to see the artist and album name of the “related” albums. Maybe it’s not a huge thing, but I’m excited to have this new feature in, the first since our public launch. Enjoy!

Hello World!

I love music, and I love hunting for new musical treasures. I’ve spent countless hours prowling around music stores, searching for that next hot thing. Nowadays this happens online, which is infinitely more vast than the largest CD shop, yet the interface for exploration is woefully inadequate. You either have to wade through artist and album pages bloated with info, or you have to give up the hunt entirely and just let some recommendation engine pick things out for you.

Fathom is our humble attempt to turn this situation around. It strips it all back down to the crucial elements: the album cover and the music itself. It lets you glide effortlessly from album to album. It uses recommendations to make sure there is always more to explore, but you’re the one in control, you’re the one who decides which way to go next.

It’s still in development (and let me tell you, we’ve got big ideas!) – mind the sawdust and all that – but it’s already plenty fun to play with. Please, come on in, check it out, and let us know what you think!
